Grandma Flo’s Pound Cake: A Thanksgiving Tradition

This Thanksgiving, my babies had one request: Pound Cake. And when it comes to pound cake, there’s only one place to turn—my grandmother’s old cookbooks.

If you knew my grandmother, Flora—affectionately called “Flo Money”—then you knew she was one of the best cooks to ever grace a kitchen. She was famously known as “The Cake Lady,” and while every cake she made was top-tier, her Pound Cake? That one hit different. 🙌🏽

More Than a Recipe—A Legacy

Growing up, being in the kitchen with her was just part of life. She made everything fresh, from scratch, and unknowingly, she instilled in me the essence of farm-to-table cooking before I even knew what that meant. Her kitchen wasn’t just a place for food—it was a place for learning, laughing, and soaking in the wisdom she poured into every meal.

Though she transitioned over 20 years ago, she left behind more than just memories. She left behind:

  • Her treasured cookbooks, spanning over 30 years and filled with handwritten notes.

  • Her bundt pan, responsible for baking hundreds of pound cakes.

  • Her sifter, a tool that’s been passed down through generations.

Keeping the Tradition Alive

I don’t bake often, but when I do, I trust her recipes. Each time, I can almost feel her presence—along with her firm yet loving reminder to “not over-beat the cake.”

This year, I’m hoping to do her justice. I’ll check back in and let y’all know how it goes. 🥮

Do you have a family recipe that brings back memories? Let’s talk about it in the comments!

Pound Cake Update: A Success

The cakes turned out solid. I followed Ma’s recipe closely, making tweaks to dairy, sifted the flour, measured everything carefully, and made sure not to over-beat the batter.

And when I cut into it? Perfect texture, rich flavor, just like I remembered. My babies didn’t waste any time digging in, so I’d say it was a win.

I don’t bake often, but this one reminded me why these recipes matter. It’s more than just food, it’s tradition.

Might have to do this again soon.

What’s a family recipe you always go back to? Let me know in the comments.
